Caritas’ Disaster Response teams in Nepal are preparing to help survivors after heavy rain triggered landslides in Accham and Dadeldhura districts. 45 people are confirmed dead with 12 people killed in the remote village of Mastamandu 775 km west of Kathmandu.

This latest disaster occurs as Caritas fears that flooding in India could worsen with more rains forecast, threatening to burst river banks and dams and inundate vast areas. An estimated 300 people have been killed and 2.5 million people displaced due to heavy rains and flooding in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in South India.  Many remote communities are yet to receive aid and the Indian air force is delivering food and water to communities completely cut off.

“Caritas has been able to give immediate relief to some of the people who have been forced from their homes. At the moment, the focus is on food, medical supplies, drinking water, and making sure people are safe”, said Caritas’ Mr Ambrose Christy from flood affected areas in India.

Over 50 villages have been completely submerged or marooned in Andhra Pradesh and 1,200 temporary camps have been established to house those displaced by the floods.
Caritas India has launched an appeal to respond to an initial 35,550 families in 14 of the most affected districts with tarpaulins, food, cooking utensils, clean drinking water, bedding and mosquito nets.

Caritas Australia is accepting donations to its Communities in Crisis – Asia Pacific Appeal. Once immediate needs are addressed we will focus on the long-term rehabilitation of the affected populations.
