Project compassion 2009 - An environment to grow in
As we prepare for the coming celebration of Easter, I again thank you for your support to Caritas Australia. Throughout the Lenten period we are called to reflect on our lives and also on our world.
The hope of a new year was shattered in DR Congo and Zimbabwe with looming disasters. Yet despite millions having lost their lives in Congo over the last decade and millions more directly threatened with starvation in Zimbabwe, the media seems barely interested. In contrast the brutal conflagration in Gaza has secured the media’s interest with blanket coverage.
Whilst we cannot measure suffering, everyone’s pain is important, and it is interesting to reflect on the stories and situations where the light does not always shine.
Closer to home in Fiji, severe rains and tidal inundations have caused mass floodings where thousands of those who reside in makeshift camp settlements on the outskirts of towns have lost what little they had. Yet in our own media we hear of only the inconvenience to tourists. Such a lack of compassion and feeling for our brothers and sisters in desperate need must be challenged.
The financial crisis has already or seems set to affect us all. Certainly at Caritas we have noticed changes in the ability of people to be able to support the work we do with the most vulnerable in the world. As we head into our main fundraising drive for 2009, Project Compassion, we encourage you to keep those most in need in our world, in your thoughts and hearts.
The light being shone on the world as witnessed through the hope that is being given to Teopista and her family in Uganda, is proof that we are making a difference. We can effectively tackle poverty and injustice; the time to do so is now.
We call on you to support us and the millions we have and continue to help around the world, to lift them out of desperate poverty and give them dignity and hope. You can make a difference, support Project Compassion and help make this a world full of justice.
