Avoiding guilt trips Down Under
If you ask someone the destination of World Youth Day, Sydney 08 - you’d probably get a strange look.
The answer is seemingly obvious – Sydney.
However, while Sydney is the host city, the ultimate destination is not a city or a place. Rather it is a world revitalised by the Gospel values of justice, peace and solidarity.
True, there’s no map to get there. Nor is it on any famous pilgrimage routes. However, this is a journey that we are called to make.
The Ethical Pilgrim's Guide is about helping young people to use the journey to Sydney to think and plan for the ‘other’ journey, which is nothing short of transforming the world.Sure, that’s a big call. But if you’re coming to Sydney, you want something for your buck, Euro or Yen.
In this guide you will find suggestions on how to travel in a way that is just, simple and sustainable – in a word, ethically. After all, there are a lot of negative effects associated with modern tourism, from damage to the environment to the exploitation of locals.
However, as the world needs Ethical People, not only Ethical Pilgrims, this guide should only be a beginning. Ultimately it is the decisions that pilgrims make and persevere with when they return home, drawing from the experiences of an Oceanic WYD, that will create lasting change.
