The Joy of Safety: Anna’s story
In February this year, Tropical Cyclone Winston struck Fiji with devastating force, leaving tens of thousands of people without shelter and access to safe water, and in need of food assistance.
Anna, 73, lost everything in the storm. Her house was destroyed, her kitchen and all household items had been blown away – as well as items of great sentimental value, such as her beloved rosary.
Caritas Australia and the wider Caritas Oceania network were able to provide emergency relief to those affected by the cyclone, like Anna.
This came in the form of immediate support, such as shelter kits and non-food items for over 1000 households and long-term support to our partner, the Tutu Rural Training Centre, who offered food parcels, and helped replant destroyed crops to ensure food security and restore income sources.
Disaster relief projects help people like Anna who suffered great loss due to Cyclone Winston. This help is only made possible by people like you who give the gift of relief to those who need shelter, sustenance and hope during a time of disaster or conflict.
