The joy of a sustainable livelihood: Ritha’s story
Together with African partner organisations, Caritas Australia is working to empower people like Ritha, a Tanzanian mother-of-two, to become food secure and gain greater control of their lives.
Like many rural Tanzanians, Ritha’s family relied on subsistence farming but the poor quality of land, vulnerability to drought and market price fluctuations left them with insufficient food and without money.
Thanks to our donors, Ritha was able to diversify her skills and build a small, successful business raising and selling pigs. “I use the money to buy food and school supplies, and for health services. My family and I are very happy,” she says.
As a mother, the joy of being able to provide for her children – and show them that it’s possible to build a path out of poverty – was a wonderful gift for Ritha.
This gift will bring the joy of sustainable agriculture and new livelihoods to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world.
