Back in February I had the opportunity to visit our program in Malindi with Mary Wachira, our Program Officer in the Nairobi office, Kenya. Over the last three years, Mary has been visiting the communities involved in the program regularly. "The fact that they can now afford a smile, this says everything,” Mary told me. On Monday, September 12, 2011, a huge fire broke out along the Lunga Lunga Road between Nairobi city centre and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Industrial Area, in which at least 100 people mainly from the Surrounding Sinai slums lost their lives and at least one hundred more were admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital, many with serious burns.

We met Elella in the town of Lokitaung, around 50km on the Kenyan side of the Ethiopian border. She had come to the town to try to sell charcoal. Every day she walks 5km to Lokitaung in a desperate attempt to earn money.

Built by the Caritas network as part of the Katangi Food Security Project in 2008, the Kwa Kivanga dam has been a huge success. Here in the village of Kalele in southern Kenya, where locals often walk for hours each day to collect water from distant sources, the hand-dug dam helped trap 21,000 cubic meters of rainwater within an easy walk of nearby villages.
