On Wednesday, 27th of February 2013, Pope Benedict XVI held his final General Audience at St Peter’s Square. Michelle Hough, communications officer for Caritas Internationalis, was amongst the crowds of people gathered to farewell him.

The United Nations (UN) says 108 people have been killed in the Syrian town of Houla. Nearly half of them were children. Witnesses and survivors told the UN that most of the victims died as a result of summary executions. The Pope has expressed great pain as a result of the massacre. The Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé has asked for Pope Benedict XVI’s personal engagement in ending new HIV infections in children.During an audience with the Pope, Mr Sidibé spoke to him about how keeping children free from HIV was an achievable goal and, with concerted efforts, one which can be reached by 2015.

The Holy Father’s help “is a wonderful initiative, which encourages us a lot,” said the President of Caritas Lebanon. “We thank the Holy Father and his collaborators for their tenderheartedness. The Pope is close to all those suffering in the world and is close to the drama of the Syrian people. We hope and pray that the suffering of the Syrian people soon comes to an end”. Today is the United Nations’ (UN) International Human Solidarity Day, which is held on 20 December every year. This day’s aim is to celebrate unity in diversity and to remind people on the importance of solidarity in working towards eradicating poverty.
