Philippines floods appeal
In December 2011, flash floods caused by Typhoon Washi killed over 1,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless on the island of Mindanao, the Philippines. This is a large scale emergency which is still unfolding, however you can help. Please donate and help us continue caring for the people of Mindanao.
Caritas' response
Caritas Australia, the international Caritas network and our partners are already engaged in long-term programs across Mindanao and the Philippines.
Representatives from the Caritas international network and local partners are working closely with the Philippino Government’s disaster response team. Caritas partners are currently conducting needs assessments, and aerial surveys of the region by helicopter are being carried out.
This is a large scale emergency which is still unfolding. It is still unknown what the overall impact will be on the Philippines. Caritas Australia and our partners will continue to assess the situation.
Background
On Friday 16 December 2011, Typhoon Washi hit northeastern Mindanao, Philippines, causing severe flash flooding and widespread devastation. At least 1,000 people were killed and many more are missing, as well hundreds of thousands of families have been displaced.
The floodwaters have destroyed roads and infrastructure in numerous cities and towns, leaving many of them difficult to access and making the immediate response challenging.
Mindanao is the second largest and easternmost island in the Philippines. It is also the name of one of the three island groups in the country, which consists of the island of Mindanao and smaller surrounding islands. The provinces of Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Sur are also among the most affected.
