Caritas network responds to Peru floods
24 Mar 2017 | Emergency Relief | Emergencies | Peru
Heavy rains in Peru have led to devastating floods and landslides across several regions of the country.
As of March 19, Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense estimated that the floods and landslides have affected approximately 627,000 people, with 75 deaths and 263 injured. Many homes, buildings and roads have been severely damaged, as well as loss of crops and damage to irrigation canals.
The northern regions of the country have been most impacted, including the country’s capital Lima. The heavy rain is expected to continue until the end of March.
Caritas Internationalis is in close contact with Caritas Peru and member organisations in the country on the emergency situation. Caritas Australia is also in contact with Caritas Peru. We currently support three partner agencies in the country.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by the disaster.
