Story of impact: Halima's journey

Halima fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State and journeyed to Cox’s Bazar, the largest refugee camp in the world. Our local partner, Caritas Bangladesh, helped Halima access shelter and cooking equipment so that she can feed her family and support her children’s education.

She participated in hygiene and sanitation training and took on the role of community trainer herself, organising the cleaning of washrooms, wells and toilets.

Halima is proud that she is able to earn a small income, while maintaining the health of her family and the cleanliness of the camp community. Her children are adapting to life in the camp and are now at school.

Now I can keep my children clean, educate them and cover expenses for their needs.”

This program is supported by the Australian government through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership (AHP).

About us

Caritas Australia is international aid and development agency of the Catholic Church in Australia. For more than 55 years, we have been working alongside vulnerable communities in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and with First Australians to forge a path out of poverty.

Together with your support, we can create a just world for all.

Together, we can create lasting change

Political, social and economic factors can all interlink to create conditions that thrust a community into poverty – sometimes for generations. We work alongside vulnerable communities around the world to tackle poverty by focusing on significant global issues, such as health, education, women’s rights, food and water security

At Caritas Australia we believe advocacy is important for creating long term change and addressing the structural causes of poverty. We support a number of advocacy actions, including:

Project Compassion

Project Compassion is our flagship fundraising campaign that is run during Lent every year. Parishes, schools and communities across Australia participate in Project Compassion to help raise funds for people living in poverty around the world. You can put your compassion into action by starting your own fundraiser or making a donation.

Women for the World

Women and girls around the world face gender discrimination, inequality and poverty. Women for the World brings the Australian community together to stand with women across the world through community-led fundraisers and events. It is held in August and September every year.

Caritas Australia is fully accredited by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), responsible for managing the Australian government’s aid program. A number of development programs in Asia and Africa implemented by Caritas Australia and our in-country partners are responding to COVID-19 with support from the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
