Tropical Cyclone Fani made landfall on May 4, with wind speeds of up to 175 kilometres per hour. Early warnings have ensured around 1.6 million people have taken shelter in cyclone-safe accommodation.

However, a total of 5.7 million people has been affected. Heavy downpour has caused sea levels to rise by 1.5 metres and has snapped electricity lines and tree branches on land. Currently, 40 casualties have been reported and there is an immediate need for food and drinking water and sanitation resources on the ground.

We expect to have more news in the coming days, including information on the scale of the disaster and if our network can provide support.

Caritas Australia would like to express our solidarity with partners, friends and the people of Bangladesh and India who have been affected by Cyclone Fani. You are in our prayers.
