Preparing for the trek of a lifetime

This November, a number of Caritas supporters will embark on our ‘Trekking in Solidarity’ journey in Nepal.
The adventure will see a number of participants take on the Annapurna circuit and visit several Caritas Australia-supported programs along the way. Those taking part have been busy over the last few months fundraising for their journeys and preparing for the challenge ahead.
Caritas Diocesan Coordinator for Sandhurst, Kerry Stone, is taking part in the trek, along with her husband Colin, and the pair are both looking forward to discovering the Annapurna region next month in the name of a good cause.
“I’ve always harboured an ambition to trek in Nepal but never thought it was going to happen until this year when Caritas presented the chance to not only do this but to give it meaning by turning it into a fundraising challenge,” says Kerry.
“Col (Colin) has done a bit of bushwalking with his mates over the years and has always been a great supporter of, and believer in, the work of Caritas so convincing him to come to Nepal wasn’t too difficult.”
Kerry and Colin's family and friends have been contributing to their fundraising efforts and Kerry says their loved ones have been “fabulously supportive”.
“We’re also looking to our small local community. We have collection tins at Numurkah Pharmacy of which we’re retired partner/owners and in our local parish,” adds Kerry.
Fellow trekkers Jan and Gavan Cashman have also looked to their local community for support for the upcoming adventure.
“We have been humbled by people’s generosity,” says Jan.
Jan and Gavan live in Canberra, which means they’ve been blessed with some scenic views on some of their preparation walks, but have also kept things simple.
“Flexibility exercises and daily walks up the backtrack with our beloved dog Samson have all been part of the preparation,” says Jan.
The couple are long-time supporters of Caritas and are interested to see the impact of Caritas programs in Nepal, particularly after the earthquake in 2015.
“We have supported Caritas for many years and have been extremely impressed with its wonderful collaborative work in [the] most needy communities.”
Funds raised for the trek will assist vulnerable communities that Caritas supports.
From everyone at Caritas, we wish all of the participants a fulfilling and safe adventure and thank them for their generous efforts!
