Show your solidarity by joining women across Australia, standing with Women around the World, by hosting your own Women for the World event.
Women for the World event encourages people to stand in solidarity with women in poverty around the world. Women represent the greatest proportion of people experiencing extreme poverty around the world and are at greater risk of violence and human rights abuses. Many women remain marginalised and unable to participate fully in their societies.
We’ll bring together thousands of women who will host their own Women for the World events this September. These events will range from a simple morning tea, through to a movie night, a garage sale or a dinner party.
Bring together friends, families and colleagues to help empower women living in poverty in marginalised communities around the world.
All funds raised will be used to support long term development programs with vulnerable women and their communities across Africa, Asia, East Timor, Latin America, the Pacific and with Australia’s First Peoples. The empowerment of women is an integral part of the work of Caritas Australia and our partner agencies all over the world. We understand that by supporting whole communities and equipping people with skills and opportunities to live with dignity, peace and safety, we can make a lasting impact. Ensuring women have physical and economic security, and are in decision making positions within their communities is vital for those communities to flourish, regardless of which country that program is operating in.
Michelle Fernon, a long-time supporter of Caritas Australia, and one of the founders of Women for the World believes it’s time to take action, together we are able to make a lasting impact into these women’s lives.
“Many face systemic discrimination that prevents them from gaining an education, accessing healthcare and securing employment. But we also know that we can do something about it and if we reach out and help a woman, her family and her community can climb out of poverty.”
Women for the World events are all about bringing together those who are passionate about social justice, particularly where it relates to women. The fundraiser is a great opportunity to have a great time with your friends and family, while making an enormous difference to women’s lives globally.”
When you host a Women for the World event, the most important thing is to have fun. So choose something you like to do, get your friends family and colleagues together and just go for it.
“By bringing together women who care about these issues and utilising their incredible networks, we can build a community of women who are passionate about helping to fight poverty and promoting justice globally.” - Michelle Fernon
What your dollars can do
Your donations could make vulnerable women to create more positive lives for themselves.
- $50 can build an energy-saving stove for a family, which uses less firewood to conserve the natural environment in Malawi
- $100 can provide 15 female farmers with vegetable seeds, so they can grow sustainable food in Nepal.
- $300 can provide 30 days worth of food for a woman staying in a domestic violence shelter in Timor-Leste.
- $570 could provide two days of training for health centre staff so they can share new knowledge about childhood nutrition with local communities in Cambodia.
- $1400 can change the lives of 10 women who have left a domestic violence shelter by engaging them in various small business activities for one year in Timor-Leste.
