UPDATE: Women for the World is now in your hands. Join with women across Australia, standing with Women around the World, by hosting your own event. Check out our event ideas at www.womenfortheworld.org.au and you could be showing your solidarity in just a few clicks.
During May this year, Women for the World events will be bringing together women in Australia to raise awareness and funds for women living in poverty globally.
Organised by Australian women with a passion for social justice, Women for the World events are being held in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The events are held in solidarity with women around the world, and in support of Caritas’ programs that empower people around the world who are most marginalised.
Women make up approximately a large percentage of the world’s poor. Many women, particularly in developing countries, face systematic discrimination in participation of community life.
At the Women for the World events this year, special guest Psyche Mae from the Philippines will be speaking about how Caritas’ programs have empowered her and her family, and how she is now able to help her own community.
Psyche Mae grew up in the Philippines in challenging circumstances. With her parents and four siblings, they lived in a relocation site for squatter families – a desperately poor area on the edge of a garbage dump.
In 2004, she started to take part in the Urban Renewal Program run by the Faithful Companions of Jesus – a program supported by Caritas Australia. She says the skills, knowledge and education that she and her family received from the program gave them the strength to get through many difficult times.
Now, Psyche Mae is 25, and is a qualified social worker. Her passion is helping women who have been impacted by domestic violence.
"Without that program [the Urban Renewal Program], I may not be here with you today,” said Psyche Mae. “Many women would still be suffering from poverty. It really has transformed my life."
