Caritas staff respond to the 2013 Typhoon HaiyanCaritas Australia and our partners are preparing to respond to Typhoon Mangkhut as it approaches the Phliippines.

Typhoon Mangkhut (also known as Typhoon Ompong) is considered the strongest typhoon this year. Landfall is expected for Saturday morning.

Storm surges up to seven metres high are expected to hit coastal areas.

Heavy rains will likely trigger flash floods and landslides.

The Caritas network will remain in the Philippines before, during and after the typhoon. Rapid Assessment Teams have been deployed and an operations centre has been established.

If the devastation is of the magnitude predicted, Caritas Australia will respond using funds from our Asia Emergency Appeal. You can donate here.

NASSA (Caritas Philippines) and Catholic Relief Services are on the ground and are informing Caritas Australia as the emergency progresses.

Local goverments have begun the evacuation of high risk areas, including in the Northern coastal and island villages of Cagayan province.

Caritas staff are monitoring the situation on the ground to help deliver essential food, medical and other emergency supplies to affected locals. The possibility of floods may exacerbate the likelihood of waterborne disease, an eventuality which Caritas staff are also preparing for.

Caritas Australia is also liaising about the response with fellow members of the Church Agencies Network Disaster Operations (CAN DO).

Australians who wish to support the people of the Philippines at this time can do so by donating to our Asia Emergency Appeal.
