I was in Dili, Timor-Leste on Apology Day, 13 February, 2008. I had been asked “What are you doing here, Malai? Have you come to make us like your Aboriginal people?” I had no response. I listened to the Apology moved by Kevin Rudd on Radio Australia and remember the tears welling in my eyes.

Terry Russell is Caritas Australia’s Indonesia Partnerships Coordinator, based in the capital city of Jakarta. He recently visited some Indigenous ‘Dayak’ communities supported by Caritas Australia’s projects in West Kalimantan, on the large island of Borneo.
