Tropical depression over the Solomon Islands

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the severe flooding in Honiara and all affected areas throughout the Solomon Islands. Caritas Australia is standing by ready to assist those affected.

Heavy rain over the last few days has led to severe flash flooding in the capital city of the Solomon Islands, Honiara and heavy flooding in rural areas of Guadalcanal and in Malaita Islands.

Reports state that there are at least six confirmed deaths and 30 people are missing. It is thought that many others have been swept out to sea by the flooded rivers and streams.

A large number of homes in residential areas and settlements near the Mataniko River have been destroyed. It is estimated that over 10,000 people have been affected by the floods.

Caritas Australia is keeping in constant contact with our regional staff for updates on the situation. We are ready to respond and provide assistance as required to those affected by the devastating floods.

We will continue to keep you updated on the situation and our response over the next few days.

Caritas Australia has had a long term presence in the Solomon Islands, and our program work has included a disaster risk reduction component. You can find out more in Martina’s story from Project Compassion 2014.
