Empowering women to walk in solidarity

24 Sep 19

During September, Caritas Australia has been celebrating its annual Women for the World campaign. This momentous celebration of female empowerment is uniting women in solidarity across Australia. Luncheons have been held in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. Caritas supporters unable to attend needn’t worry as there is still time to host your own Women for the World fundraising event.

Women for the World is an initiative of Caritas Australia supporters, Dr Michelle Fernon, Alison Green and Nicole Murphy. The ladies launched the original Women for the World luncheon after hearing Caritas Canberra's Lulu Mitshabu's tragic story of her extraordinary forced exile from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Australia. Lulu works for Caritas on programs which are focused on improving the livelihood of women and girls.

  • Nearly two-thirds of the world's illiterate adults are women
  • 5.6 million women and girls work in forced labour
  • 1 in 3 women and girls globally experience violence

Caritas Indias’ Shimray is a gender and migration expert, helping to oversee the Caritas Australia/Caritas India Self Help initiative. Shimray was born into the lowest social rankings in India and with fortitude she rose up to thrive as a shining example to Indian women. At the Women for the World luncheons, Shimray spoke about the program in action and how vulnerable women have strengthened their capacity to respond to issues that impact their lives, such as domestic violence.

Shimray said, “The Women for the World concept is great, but what is greater, is to be able to experience that solidarity shown in action, by women in Australia. Regardless of their age, where they belong, who they are and what they do, all contribute to the work of social justice around the world and that is amazing.”

  • Funds raised will support vital projects across 22 countries across Africa, Asia, the Pacific and with Australia’s First Peoples.
  • Last year Caritas was able to assist two million directly through emergency and development programs, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
