Around the Region: Victoria and Tasmania - Term 2
11 Jul 18
Our Justice Educators share and teach the work of Caritas and social justice each term to schools in their regions.
From Megan Bourke and Gwen Michener, in Victoria and Tasmania:
Thanks to all of our friends in schools in Sale, Ballarat, Hobart, Sandhurst and Melbourne Dioceses for your generous support during Project Compassion 2018. We are thrilled that so many schools felt called to action to stand with our world’s most vulnerable and marginalised communities.

Just Leadership Days
On May 31, a Just Leadership Day was held at St Catherine’s Primary School, Lalor West with 86 students from across Year 5 and 6 participating. The students were surprised to learn how many children are refugees, and how many children pass away before the age of five from preventable diseases.
Thank you also to St Joseph’s Primary School, Warragul, in the Sale Diocese, for hosting a Year 5 and 6 Just Leadership Day. Students from St Ita’s, Drouin, St Joseph’s, Trafalgar and Bunyip Primary School also attended. Students learnt about global inequities and how Caritas assists the most vulnerable communities around the world.
Aquinas College Reconciliation Walk
On May 29, we walked in solidarity with our indigenous brothers and sisters, with Nova Peris and Courtenay Dempsey, as well as the students and staff from Aquinas College and other schools from the area for Reconciliation Week. Nova Peris and Courtenay Dempsey spoke about the significance of the walk to Canberra that Michael Long took to put indigenous issues back on the national agenda in 2004. Thank you to all schools who participated.
