Caritas Australia celebrates the national recognition of Andrea and the NPY Women’s Council, one of our partner agencies. The organisation has worked tirelessly for the empowerment of women in Australia’s Aboriginal communities.

Working through NPY Women’s Council’s head office in Alice Springs, Andrea has supported the employment, health, wellbeing, and family safety of Aboriginal women from 26 remote communities throughout the tri-state area of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a social enterprise of NPY Women’s Council, this award winning enterprise fosters traditional cultural practices such as fibre art.

For Nyurpaya Kaika-Burton, NPY Women’s Council’s income-generating arts programs have been both spiritually and economically empowering.

“All that grass is growing on sacred land in various areas and we realised as we were collecting the grasses and making the baskets that we were in fact weaving the country,” Nyurpaya said,

“We realised we were working with a very ancient story and tradition, but making new things out of it."

Caritas Australia congratulates Andrea on her achievements. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the NPY Women’s Council to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in First Australian communities.
