Caritas Australia is deeply saddened by the news of the violent attacks in Sri Lanka over the Easter Weekend. We have been in touch with our family at Caritas Sri Lanka to offer the prayers and solidarity of our staff and supporters in Australia. Caritas Sri Lanka has been in touch with the affected dioceses and is collecting further information about the incidents and the response. Below is a message from Caritas Australia to Caritas Sri Lanka’s National Director, Fr Mahendra Gunatilleke on Easter Sunday.

Dear Fr Mahendra,

We in Australia are just hearing the tragic news of the attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all Sri Lankan families at this time.

Easter is a time of peace, love and hope. These actions of hate are the opposite of all we believe in. This tragedy is such a terrible thing to bear but we urge that it not be allowed to turn your wonderful country and people back after so many year of conflict.

We are in full solidarity with you, Fr Mahendra, at this dark hour. We will continue to pray and send our wishes to for a restoration of peace. Our hearts go out to you at this difficult time,

In solidarity,
Paul O’Callaghan
Caritas Australia CEO

Together we pray for peace in our world, founded in love for all our brothers and sisters. Together we will work in mercy and for justice.
