A young student recently won an award for her inspirational story of fleeing conflict in Iraq to her new life in Australia, and the help she received from Caritas Jordan along the way.

Sarah Sona, a student at St Dominics Primary, Broadmeadows, won the Australian Catholics magazine Young Journalist Award earlier this month, for her moving piece titled ‘New Beginning’.

The story detailed Sarah and her family’s journey from their homeland in 2014, where they eventually made it to Jordan. Sarah’s winning entry acknowledged the wonderful welcome and support she received from Caritas Jordan whilst she and her family waited in a border refugee camp supported by funds from Caritas Australia.

“The Caritas people were very kind, trying to make us forget the pain of leaving our families and friends in Iraq,” her story reads.

Sarah’s award-winning efforts were recently highlighted by SBS World News, where she spoke of her love of writing.

“When I was in Jordan, some teachers from Caritas came and they started teaching me writing", Sarah said in the piece.

"I knew the letters but I didn’t know how to read. They started showing me easy words, like apple and banana and I started learning quickly.”

From everyone at Caritas Australia, we congratulate Sarah on her inspiring story and award!
