Youths gain understanding of Project Compassion at rally

10 Apr 17

A youth rally was recently held at St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour, raising awareness and funds for Project Compassion.

St John Paul College Youth Ministry Officer Eleanor Hewitt has written a recap of her experience at the event.

"We started the rally with fried rice for dinner, with the reason being that rice is such a staple food for people in developing countries. By being aware of this, the tone of the event was set for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Inside the hall, the band was playing Praise and Worship music and there were many Caritas posters set up around the hall, with a feature wall at the front.

As well as Caritas, our rally was also influenced by the Scripture Timothy 4:12, "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young but instead set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love in faith and purity." So in a talk, I incorporated these two themes, highlighting how powerful this generation is and what a difference we can make when we choose to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, and be servant leaders and help those in need, just as Caritas does.

We then moved on to a rotation of 3 activities that were aimed to help the students grow in understanding of the cultures of the people that Project Compassion helps. One group made soccer balls out of plastic bags and newspapers, others played a traditional Vietnamese game and a traditional Aboriginal game.

We then moved on to a different part of the night where we had a Year 12 student give her testimony on opening herself up to Jesus and then we gave the students the options of going to Reconciliation and Prayer Teams. The reaction to this was incredible. We then finished the night with some final Praise and Worship.

I would just like to thank you to the staff at Caritas Australia for sending me the posters, other resources and for the Caritas T-shirt. Where most girls would go crazy about a t-shirt with Justin Bieber or something on it, that Caritas t-shirt is so special to me so thank you very much."
