Creation Changemakers: Catholic Schools Unite for Peace with Creation

At Caritas Australia, we believe that caring for our common home is a vital expression of our Catholic faith. Through our Catholic Earthcare program, we’re excited to launch this year’s Creation Changemakers campaign — empowering schools across the country to take action for ecological and social justice during the Season of Creation.

Held annually from 1 September to 4 October, the Season of Creation is an ecumenical celebration where Christians around the world unite in prayer and action for the Earth. This year’s global theme, “Peace with Creation,” invites us to reflect on our role to care for our common home — and respond with creativity, compassion, and commitment.

A Garden of Peace: Action Rooted in Faith

To bring this theme to life, through the Catholic Earthcare program, Caritas Australia is encouraging Australian schools to create a Garden of Peace — a symbolic and practical way to show care for creation. These gardens can be large or small, outdoor or indoor, new or enhanced. What matters most is the spirit of faith, love, and ecological awareness they represent.

Whether by establishing plants, decorating with student-made paper doves, building terrariums, or adding peaceful messages and signage, each school can participate in a way that reflects their resources, creativity, and community.

Why Should Schools Get Involved?

By participating in the Creation Changemakers campaign, schools join a national and global movement living out Laudato Si’ and Catholic Social Teaching. The campaign supports schools to:

  • Deepen the connection between faith and sustainability.
  • Empower students as changemakers and leaders.
  • Promote ecological conversion within school communities.
  • Share their work through Caritas Australia’s national platforms.
  • Receive a formal certificate of recognition through the Catholic Earthcare Schools Program.

Early registrants also benefit from our early bird incentive: the first 50 schools to sign up receive 40 pairs of gardening gloves to support their garden projects.

This is a wonderful way for students to reflect on ecological themes through creativity, while inspiring others with their vision for a peaceful, sustainable world.
