Leaia And Her Family

When is the International Day of Charity?

The International Day of Charity is observed on 5 September to raise awareness of the importance of global solidarity and supporting people in need. It commemorates the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, whose life and work embodied the spirit of charity and compassion.

How can I take part in a charity?

At Caritas Australia, we believe that while we can't change the world overnight, we can make it better than it was yesterday. Through acts of charity and compassion, we can help support those who need it most.

There are many ways you can make a difference:

  • Make a donation to one of our appeals.

  • Become a regular giver and help create lasting change every month.

  • Leave a gift in your Will to continue your legacy of compassion.

  • Purchase a Global Gift and give a gift that gives back.

  • Turn your next meet-up into a fundraiser for Caritas Australia.

  • Raise awareness about injustice and encourage others to take action.

How does charity from Australians change lives around the world?

Watch this video to see how Leaia's life was transformed through the support of charitable giving.

"It has been a big help for my children being able to access water. Thank you for everything."

Leaia Story

Leaia

Before receiving support, Leaia's family relied on rainwater collected in old refrigerators and often had to carry water from neighbouring homes when supplies ran out. During dry periods, the lack of clean water affected daily life and sometimes prevented her children from attending school.

With support from Caritas Australia and local partner Caritas Samoa, a rainwater harvesting tank was installed at Leaia's home, providing reliable access to clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Today, Leaia's family has reliable access to clean water, improved health and hygiene, and greater opportunities for her children to attend school regularly. Leaia's story is just one example of how charity can transform lives.

This International Day of Charity, your generosity can help provide access to clean water, education, sustainable livelihoods, and emergency support for communities in need. Join us in making the world a little bit better every day.
