Where We Work

Ethiopia

Ethiopia has been experiencing a long-term drought which is devastating communities and leaving many of the most vulnerable families at risk of hunger and starvation. We are working with our partners on-the-ground to support communities to tackle hunger and improve access to clean water.

Program snapshot: Innovative Climate-Smart Livelihood Enhancement for Resilience Building Project (CLEAR)

  • We work with our partner Caritas Ethiopia/Ethiopian Catholic Church Social and Development Commission (ECC-SDCO) to support communities suffering from repeated drought, conflict-driven crisis and high rates of waterborne diseases in the southern part of Ethiopia.

  • The project will help work with communities to improve their access to clean water and sanitation, reduce the impact of disaster risks on communities and support families to have sufficient food for consumption and growth.

  • Along with your generous support, this program is supported by the Australian Government, through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).

Families can access clean water and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.

Farmers can grow crops during droughts and are less reliant on rain-fed agriculture.

Communities can adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Women and young people can access income-generating opportunities.

Worknesh's story

Worknesh is a mother of four children and a coffee and vegetable farmer living southern Ethiopia. During lean seasons, families like Worknesh’s are often at risk of hunger. The income from the coffee beans that she grows only lasts three months.

With the training and vegetable seeds provided by the CLEAR program, Worknesh has been able to grow a variety of crops, ensuring a more reliable and nutritious food source for her family.  She also gained valuable business management skills and joined a women’s savings group, allowing her to access new income streams and further strengthen her family's food security.

Video: Worknesh's Story

Worknesh is a coffee and vegetable farmer who lives with her husband and children in a village in southern Ethiopia. Droughts, climate change, lack of clean water and malaria outbreaks frequently impacted her family, with her children at high risk of hunger during the lean season. With the support of our partner, Caritas Ethiopia, Worknesh participated in the CLEAR program which enabled her to learn skills to diversify her crops, earn additional income and provide her children with nutritious food.
