Caritas Australia has echoed Pope Leo XIV’s call for dialogue and the peaceful resolution of conflict, as the world prepares to mark Easter.
In a statement Kirsten Sayers, CEO of Caritas Australia said:
“Ahead of the Easter weekend Caritas Australia echoes Pope Leo XIV’s call for peaceful dialogue and the resolution of conflict.
The scale of global conflict we are witnessing has not been seen since the end of the Second World War. These are not events we should tolerate as a global human family.
Through our work, we see the devastating human impacts of conflict in Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Sudan, where we support local partners and bear witness to immense suffering. Our staff in some of these countries speak of “living a horror movie,” and say their children struggle to sleep and wake screaming when they do.
The call for peace is especially poignant at Easter, as the Church reflects on the resurrection of Jesus, and the triumph of hope and life over death.
At start of Lent, we were also reminded that Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Reflecting on this, may each of us find it in our hearts to love our neighbours, especially those facing great hardships, wherever they may be.”
Caritas Australia is responding to humanitarian needs through its global Caritas network, working with trusted local partners who remain on the ground before, during and after crises.
Gaza: Caritas is supporting the delivery of emergency assistance including food, medical care, and psychosocial support, as communities endure extreme shortages, displacement, and ongoing insecurity.
Lebanon: With the country facing compounded economic and political crises alongside escalating violence and displacement, Caritas partners are providing emergency relief, healthcare support and assistance to displaced families and host communities.
Ukraine: Caritas continues to respond to the prolonged humanitarian impact of the war, offering shelter support, emergency relief, mental health and psychosocial services, and assistance to displaced people both within Ukraine and in neighbouring countries.
Sudan: Amid one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, Caritas partners are delivering lifesaving aid, including food, healthcare, and protection support, to communities affected by widespread violence, displacement, and hunger.
