Caritas Australia welcomes the news that Caritas Jerusalem has received official clarification from the Government of Israel confirming that, as a local organisation, it is not subject to the reregistration guidelines.
This follows a statement issued by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem on 31 December, made after Caritas Jerusalem appeared on a list of organisations denied reregistration. At the time, the Patriarchate clarified Caritas Jerusalem’s legal status and confirmed that the organisation would continue its humanitarian and development operations in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.
These operations continued without interruption throughout the process of further investigation, which concluded positively earlier this week.
Caritas Jerusalem welcomes this resolution and expresses gratitude to all those who supported the process. Caritas Internationalis, the global Caritas network, has also affirmed its commitment to continue standing alongside members serving vulnerable communities in the Holy Land.
Caritas Australia continues to work through longstanding, trusted partners in Gaza, where humanitarian needs remain immense.
Together, we are supporting efforts to provide lifesaving assistance, including access to:
Food and clean water
Shelter and household essentials
Urgent medicine and healthcare
Mental health and psychosocial support
Protection services for vulnerable families
Caritas Australia remains steadfast in its mission to bring hope, dignity and compassion to those facing the most difficult circumstances, guided by our Catholic values and our commitment to serve all people in need.
