2024 Earthquake In Morocco Distribution Of Food Paniers 02

On September 8, 2023, a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco, the strongest the region had seen in over a century. Over 2,600 lives were lost and thousands more injured. The earthquake's epicenter was near the rural town of Ighil in the Al Haouz province, where homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods were destroyed in seconds.

The devastation was immense. Entire villages, particularly in remote areas, were reduced to rubble, leaving families trapped, homeless, and in dire need of assistance. As aftershocks rippled through the region, fear and uncertainty gripped those who had already lost so much.

Pope Francis expressed profound solidarity with those affected, praying for the repose of the deceased, the healing of the injured, and comfort for those mourning the loss of loved ones and homes.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Caritas Australia launched an emergency response appeal to support our partner, Caritas Maroc.

The initial focus was on providing emergency relief—ensuring that families had access to clean water, food, medicine, and shelter. These were the lifelines that allowed survivors to begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in the face of unimaginable loss.

One year on, the work is far from over. The path to recovery for these communities is long, and Caritas Australia continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Morocco as they rebuild.

As we commemorate the 12-month anniversary of this tragedy, we reflect on the resilience and courage shown by those affected. Your donations made a tangible difference in the lives of thousands, helping to restore hope in a time of despair.

The coming months and years will be critical as affected communities transition from emergency relief to long-term development.

Your donation to our Emergency Appeal will help people affected by disasters and emergencies around the world.
